Job Rulz... the Sequel

Wow! My job rulz even more. Just yesterday I had an opportunity to obtain 2 free tickets to a Dave Matthews Band concert Saturday (tomorrow) night. But I work Saturday night. I checked the vacation calendar, and it was full, so it looked like I probably wouldn't get the night off, but I put in a request anyway. So tonight I asked my boss about it, and he said "We'll make it work. You can't get free Dave Matthews tickets and not go!".

How cool is that??!!

Guess I'm going. But I have two tickets, and one of me. So..... who wants to go??

I do! I may be pushing it to make it from Utah to Vermont in five hours, but just leave my ticket at will call and consider it a date...

Well, you didn't leave my ticket at will call ... sheesh!

But, how was the concert?

Man, I was looking all over for you!! Where were you!?!?

The concert was amazing actually. Dave Matthews was pretty much my doorway into the 90's. Pretty much until then, I thought good music, in the mainstream anyway, was a thing of the past (like... before I was born). Then Dave Matthews Band, Hootie and the Blowfish, and Blues Traveller came along and suddenly I thought there was hope... and it turned out there was!

Since then, all three of these fell by the wayside for me. I'm not even sure where Hootie went. I haven't heard much from Blues Traveller. Dave Matthews Band is huge of course, which may have been part of the problem. I felt like maybe I was on some kind of bandwagon and it was time to get off.

Well, last night put that idea to rest. It may be a bandwagon, but there's a good reason why people are jumping on board, and its all about the music. I was just in shock and disbelief at how good they are... just wow. Individual musicship and teamwork just outstanding. No flash (well, not much). Just music. Just good. Hmm, this is turning into a post. Well, maybe soon. Gotta jet for now

I'm embarrassed to say... I can't figure out that acronymn. Is that something commonly thrown around? World Trade Center? Well tempered Clavier? Neither of those makes sense in context. West Texas Country? Man, I have this uneasy feeling that I've just revealed that I'm out of touch with the world.

OOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHhh

You must mean Woods Tea Company!!!!

oh oh oh

right right right

Whew. Ok. I feel better now.

Hmm, I have to think about that for a sec just because of the variables. One famous, one not so famous. Very different genres. My impulse reaction is to say yes, and after thinking about it some more, would have to stick to the yes.

Woods Tea Company has never really wowed me musically in the same sense that Dave Matthews did the other night. The banjo playing must take quite a bit of skill. But there's not much about their banjo playing that seems all that much different from other banjo players I've heard. They don't write much of the music they play either. And they tend to stick to the songs... not a huge amount of jamming. Oh, right, I should mention that it was not during the songs, for most part, that DMB amazed me. The songs were really great -- every bit as tight as their recordings -- but the jamming in between was the really cool stuff. I like WTC because they play fun folky music and tell good jokes. I think I could say I've had more fun overall at WTC concerts. But there are a number of non-musical reasons for that. I was closer to the musicians... almost close enough to see what color eyes they had. I was sitting comfortably at a table with a bunch of friends, rather than standing on grass I didn't dare touch amongst smoke of all varieties, and having to watch a screen to see much detail of what the musicians were doing (fortunately with one good friend who did make it fun). I can talk to the musicians before, during, and after the concert. The music is simple and easy to sing along to. There's just a lot that's really fun about going to see WTC.

It should be pointed out, by the way, that I play neither the banjo nor the guitar or any of the other instruments involved (except the keyboard, which has wowed me the least in both bands in question). So bear in mind that I have no idea what I'm talking about. :-) I'm just your average easily-dazzled Joe.
